NIH (National Institute of Mental Health), defines panic attacks as a sudden and repeated attack of fear that last for several minutes or longer. They are characterized by a fear of disaster or of losing control even when there is no real danger. It can feel like a heart attack to some people and often times leaves feeling helpless during the length of the attack. They can occur at any time, and many people with panic disorder worry about and dread the possibility of having another attack. A person with a panic disorder may become discouraged and feel ashamed because he/she cannot carry out normal routines like going to school or work, going to the market, or driving. The shame can keep an individual from seeking the help they need to treat it.
